Calaveras County is a rural community of 40,554 with its west end in the lower Sierra Nevada foothills and its eastern end in the high Sierra. We have no metropolitan areas; our largest town is Arnold, with a population of 4,218 (2000 census). Our only incorporated city is Angels Camp with a population of 3,004.

Climate:
Varies with topography; average yearly lows are in the 30's at lower elevations and 20's in the higher elevations. Average yearly highs are in the 90's in the lower elevations and the 70's and 80's in the higher elevations. Precipitation varies from 20 to 60 inches per year, with much of it in the form of snow in the upper regions.
Geography:
Mountain foothills and oak woodlands. Extremely varied; from near sea level in the western part of the county to over 8,000 feet in the east. Topography varies from flat valleys and rolling hills in the west to steep Sierra mountains and canyons in the east.
